Indigenous Peoples' Day recognizes and aims to correct the American history that has glorified Christopher Columbus, who committed violence against Indigenous peoples. Indigenous people have lived on this land for millennia.

The Kanap Kuahan Coalition: composed of Kumeyaay tribal citizens and leaders, the Kumeyaay & Original Peoples Alliance. The goal of this collective of leaders, elders, and medicine carriers is to serve as guides to creating a more inclusive San Diego. “To remove statues, monuments, rename schools and raise awareness of the negative impact these symbols have on the emotional, physical, and spiritual health of Native/Indigenous, Black, and other People of Color. We create respectful dialogue and safe and welcoming public spaces for all by removing symbols of colonialism, racism, slavery, and genocide from public venues. We build community and create change through educational programs, social justice actions, and political action."
