Kids in Canyons
The goal of the Kids in Canyons project is to connect local youth to nature, educate them about the natural environment, and build their appreciation for it by using neighborhood canyons as Nature Classrooms.
The Kids in Canyons program provides environment-based education, supplement in-classroom learning with outside education that meets California curriculum standards. San Diego Canyonlands makes use of the canyons as Nature Classrooms for youth groups and students. We provide many hands-on learning opportunities. Because young people are fascinated with the natural environment, they are eager to learn about and help restore the canyons. While they learn, they can simultaneously help accomplish the local Canyon Friends groupʼs restoration and enhancement goals.
“Kids in Canyons” was created in partnership with Aquatic Adventures and provides in-classroom education that meets California curriculum standards, while San Diego Canyonlands provides a link to the neighborhood Canyon Friends group, a tour, and hands-on activities that also meet California standards.
Since 2005, Kids in Canyons has served 1,276 students
